Mason's Broken Arm

Our little 2 year old Mason broke his arm on the night of November 12, 2013, he was one sad little camper.

Wednesday, November 12th, was just like any other day.  We woke up, ate breakfast, laid Tanner down for a nap, cleaned the house, then got ready to take Mason and Tanner down to the shop to eat lunch with my mom and dad.  After Tanner woke up from his nap, we drove down to the shop to eat lunch.  After eating lunch, Grandpa took Mason outside to see the tractor, then we headed back home to lay the boys down for their naps.

Casey went to school around 5.  While he was gone I cooked dinner and had it all ready for him to eat when he got home around 8.  After eating dinner, we took Mason into his room to get him ready for bed.  We layed him on his bed to take off his clothes so we could put him in the tub.  He was being kind of goofy, so Casey played "This Little Piggy" with him for a few minutes He was laughing so hard, having a great time.  3 minutes later I turned around to get Mason's pajamas out of his dresser and Casey turned around to throw his dirty clothes in the hamper. I think Mason thought we were still playing with him, because he slid right of the bed, as though it were a slide, and landed right on his left elbow.  Casey quickly picked him up.  With tears streaming down Mason's face, Casey hugged him and kissed him and got Mason to calm down a little bit.

We put Mason in the tub, where he started to cry.  His cry turned into a scream.  This is when Casey and I noticed that he wasn't using his left arm at all.  He just let it dangle at his side.  Any movement of his arm, made him cry harder.  We quickly got Mason out of the tub and put his pajamas on him, he continued to cry the entire time.

After getting his clothes on, we brought him into the front room and tried to hand him things like his bink or blankie, again he wouldn't use his arm.  After about 30 minutes of screaming and trying to get him to use his arm, we finally decided it was time to take him to the doctor.

By this time it was about 9:30 pm.  After dropping Tanner off at my sister's house, we drove to the ER.

We checked in and the kind nurses took us right in.  Mason was still crying.  They tried to take his blood pressure, but his screaming made it near impossible.  They took us to a room where the doctor came in and ordered some x-rays.  Casey held Mason while they did the x-rays.  Mason was so brave.

Not long after the x-rays were taken, the nicest nurses came to let us know that Mason had indeed broken his arm.  Casey and I were completely shocked.  How could he have broken his arm, his bed is not any higher then 2 feet off the ground.

The nurses wrapped Mason's arm in a splint and told us the doctor would be right in to discuss further details.  While we were waiting another kind nurse came in to give Mason a little blanket to keep and a small bag of toys that he could use while we waited for the doctor and take home with us too.  All the nurses and doctors were so kind to us and especially to our little Mason!!!

The doctor came in to tell us that Mason had broken the bone right above his elbow.  He gave us a few names of some specialist to go to, because Mason's arm would definitely need to be put in a hard cast and maybe even require surgery.

After the doctor left and we were discharged from the hospital, we stopped and picked up Tanner, then came home and put Mason and Tanner to bed.  Mason slept the entire night through.

The next day I called the specialist and the receptionist told us that they like to see kids that have broken their bones a week after the accident to make sure swelling goes down.  I gave her all our information and the information about Mason's broken arm, and she scheduled us for an appointment a week away.

About an hour later she called back and said she had the doctor look over Mason's x-rays and he would like to see us right away.  She scheduled us for an appointment for the next day, Friday, November 14th.

Mason's appointment was at 10:00 in the morning.  After checking in, the nurse did some x-rays on Mason's arm then we waited to see the doctor.  When the doctor came in, he told us that Mason's brake was not as bad as he first thought.  He would need a hard cast for only 3 weeks and no surgery would be required!!

Mason chose a red cast.  He didn't even cry when they put it on him.  During the three weeks that Mason had on his cast, he hardly complained at all.  He was a real sport about having to wear a cast.

On December 5th, we took Mason in to get his cast off.  They used a vacuum looking machine that had a tiny saw on the end of the hose to cut his cast off. He cried the entire time, but once it was off he sure was excited.

Through this whole experience we have been so grateful for the kind nurses and doctors.  We are also so grateful that the brake wasn't worse, no surgery was required, and he only had to wear his cast for 3 weeks.  I know that someone was watching out for our little Mason and that all our praying helped in every way possible.

Mason's arm is back to normal now.  He uses it like nothing even happened!  We just hope we have no more broken bones for awhile!! :)

  1. That is so crazy that he fell off his bed and broke his arm. So glad things turned out so well, and that it was only 3 weeks!
